Are you not aware of the exact difference between E ticket and I Ticket? Get here to know the terms etickets, itickets in Indian Railways terminology. eticket and itickets are both the different forms of tickets booked through online Railways Booking Portals.

What is i Ticket ?

I ticket refers to Indian railway ticket booked through Internet ticket booking portal IRCTC website. i ticket is a regular ticket booking where any customers opting to travel will have to book tickets at least few days in advance of more than 2-3 days before the comencement of your train journey, this is because once you a have booked an iticket, it would be delivered to your home by the respected booking site within 2-3 days if you stay in the major cities. itickets and tatkal are not possible since tatkal booking starts 3 days prior the commencment of the train journey. I would say book an iticket if you are in the major cities in India and see that you book well ahead before the journey starts maybe atleast 5 days in advance. The following cities are covered for door delivery of iticket [

During the delivery of iticket you will have to produce any government issued ID card like ration card, voter ID etc.,. Please note that itickets can’t be cancelled online, the only procedure to cancel it is you need to approach your nearest recognised Passenger Reservation Counter to cancel the respective tickets and get the refund.

What is e Ticket?

An e ticket is an electronic ticket that is booked online using internet ticket booking portals like IRCTC website. This is easy as when you are travelling take a print out of the confirmation page which itself works as a ticket, plus you need to show your orginal identification proof to verify the name if TT asks during the journey.

E tickets can be booked any time before the reservation chart is prepared and can be booked on reservation status of Available/RAC/Waitlist and can be even booked for Tatkal too.

The only process to cancel E tickets is through the website that you have booked the tickets and cancellation must be done before the reservation chart is prepared. The refunded amount would be credited back to your Credit Card/ Debit Card through which you have booked the tickets.

New Train Numbers from 20-Dec-2010

Indian Railways has decided to introduce five-digit numbering system for all passenger carrying trains. The new five-digit numbering system will be effective from December this year. The five-digit scheme proposes to cover all passenger carrying trains including Duronto, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Garibrath and suburban holiday specials. However, it will not cover freight trains.

Passengers booking tickets in Mail and Express trains will need to add prefix 1 before the existing four-digit numbers while checking the reservation position through the enquiry system. Currently, trains have varying numbers including three- digit, four-digit and alphabetical-numerical ones. Five-digit train numbering has become necessary as the four-digit system is exhausted, informed a senior Railway Ministry official.
