The Indian Railways will complete 158th year of its journey on April 16. The wheels of railways moved for the first time on April 16, 1853  from Mumbai to Thane, covering a distance of about 34km. The then East Indian Railway Company introduced another train between Howrah and Hooghly on August 15, 1854. The British government took over the railways from private companies in 1869. By 1879, railway tracks were laid in a stretch of 12,455km, and railways became the most popular mode of communication. The track between Lakhisarai and Mughalsarai was laid by the Britishers in 1862 while the Howrah-Kiul route, known as Sahibganj loop line, was thrown open to people in 1860. A direct link between Howrah and Delhi was provided in the early 1860s. The railways first released its postal stamp in 1907. The railway budget was separated from the general budget in 1925.

It was a historic year for railways also because it introduced an electric locomotive hauled-passenger train between Victoria Terminal and Kurla this year. The automatic signal system was introduced in 1928 by the Central Railway. The Burma Railway was also a part o
f Indian Railways till 1937 when these two countries separated from each other. About 3,200-km-long tracks were then gifted to Burma by the Indian Railways. Railways had about 65,217km of tracks on August 15, 1947 of which about 10,523km fell in Pakistan. A Railway Board was constituted on February 18, 1905
